Impermanence, Svabhāva, and Śuka’s Resolve for Yoga
ये त्वव्यक्तात् परं नित्यं जानते शास्त्रतत्परा: । जन्ममृत्युविमुक्त च विमुक्तं सदसच्च यत्
ye tv avyaktāt paraṁ nityaṁ jānanti śāstra-tatparāḥ | janma-mṛtyu-vimuktaṁ ca vimuktaṁ sad-asac ca yat ||
Bhīṣma dit : «Ceux qui se vouent à l’étude et à la discipline des Écritures en viennent à connaître le Suprême, au-delà de l’Inmanifesté (Prakṛti) : éternel, affranchi de la naissance et de la mort, véritablement délivré, et transcendant à la fois l’être et le non-être.»
भीष्म उवाच
Steady devotion to śāstra—study, reflection, and disciplined living—leads to realization of the Supreme Reality beyond Prakriti (the Unmanifest), which is eternal and untouched by birth and death, and which transcends conceptual opposites like being and non-being.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and liberation, Bhishma continues teaching Yudhishthira, emphasizing that true knowledge of the Supreme arises for those who are steadfast in scriptural discipline and seek freedom from saṁsāra.
