Impermanence, Svabhāva, and Śuka’s Resolve for Yoga
यस्याव्यक्त न विदितं सगुणं निर्गुणं पुन: । तेन तीर्थानि यज्ञाक्ष सेवितव्या विपश्चिता
yasya avyaktam na viditaṁ saguṇaṁ nirguṇaṁ punaḥ | tena tīrthāni yajñākṣa sevitavyā vipāścitāḥ ||
Bhīṣma dit : «Celui qui n’a pas compris l’Inmanifesté (Prakṛti) et qui n’a pas reconnu le Suprême à la fois avec attributs et au-delà des attributs, doit—s’il est sage—recourir aux lieux saints de pèlerinage et accomplir les sacrifices (yajña).»
भीष्म उवाच
If one has not yet attained metaphysical insight into the Unmanifest and the Supreme in both saguṇa and nirguṇa modes, one should follow purificatory disciplines—pilgrimage and sacrifice—as practical supports for ethical living and inner refinement.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs the listener on paths of dharma and liberation. Here he recommends ritual and tīrtha-observance as an appropriate course for those who lack higher realization, presenting them as preparatory means.
