सहसंर॑ तुभ्यमित्युक्त्वा ब्राह्मणान् सम्प्रपद्यते । “राजा अपने विशाल यज्ञमें ब्राह्मणोंको सोनेके निष्क दिया करते थे। वहाँ द्विजलोग पुकार-पुकारकर कहते कि “ब्राह्मणो! यह तुम्हारे लिये निष्क है
sahasraṃ tubhyam ity uktvā brāhmaṇān samprapadyate |
Vāyu dit : «Après avoir déclaré : “Mille (niṣkas) pour toi”, le roi parvenait enfin à faire avancer les brāhmaṇas. Dans ce grand sacrifice, on offrait des niṣkas d’or, et les deux-fois-nés criaient sans cesse : “Brāhmaṇas ! Ce niṣka est pour vous, ce niṣka est pour vous”, mais nul ne s’avançait pour le prendre. Ce n’est que lorsque le don était amplifié—“mille pour toi”—que des récipiendaires se présentaient.» L’épisode montre comment la pureté du don et la retenue du digne peuvent être éprouvées par l’ampleur de la tentation, et comment la générosité peut dissiper l’hésitation sans contrainte.
