Adhyāya 284: Tapas as a Corrective to Household Attachment

Parāśara’s Instruction

येषां न विद्यते संख्या प्रमाणं रूपमेव च । असंख्येयगुणा रुद्रा नमस्तेभ्यो<5स्तु नित्यश:

yeṣāṃ na vidyate saṅkhyā pramāṇaṃ rūpam eva ca | asaṅkhyeyaguṇā rudrā namas tebhyo 'stu nityaśaḥ ||

Bhīṣma proclame une révérence constante envers les Rudras : ceux dont le nombre ne peut être compté, dont la mesure ne peut être fixée, et dont les formes n’ont pas de borne ; leurs qualités sont elles aussi au-delà de toute énumération. Le verset fait de la dévotion une humilité devant l’incommensurable, rappelant que la vie éthique s’enracine dans la reconnaissance de ce qui dépasse le calcul et la maîtrise humains.
