परिव्राजक-आचारः (Conduct of the Wandering Renunciant) — Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva 269

पुरस्ताद्‌ भावितात्मानो यथावच्चरितव्रता: । चरन्ति धर्म कृच्छेडपि दुर्गे चैवापि संहता:

purastād bhāvitātmāno yathāvac caritavratāḥ | caranti dharmaṃ kṛcchre 'pi durge caivāpi saṃhatāḥ ||

Kapila dit : «Dans les temps anciens, les hommes à la conduite disciplinée purifiaient d’abord leur for intérieur en observant avec justesse les règles de retenue requises. Même confrontés à l’épreuve, ou contraints de traverser des lieux difficiles et périlleux, ils demeuraient unis et poursuivaient ensemble la pratique du dharma. Pour ces hommes d’autrefois, qui accomplissaient le dharma en communauté soudée, l’acte même était éprouvé comme une joie; ils ne tombaient pas dans une faute qui eût requis une expiation (prāyaścitta).»
