Instruction on the Cessation of Craving

Educational Q&A

Kapila rejects the claim that mere abandonment of action leads to liberation, calling it a misleading doctrine born of ignorance of Vedic conclusions. He upholds disciplined Vedic action—especially yajña performed according to scripture—as a dharmic path that protects from sin and leads to higher attainments.

In a didactic discourse within the Śānti Parva, Kapila contrasts two approaches: a fashionable but false advocacy of karma-tyāga by idle scholars, and the orthodox Vedic model where a Brahmin performs sacrifices per Veda-śāstra, gains merit, ascends to higher worlds, and becomes a source of satisfaction for others through rightful enjoyments.
