अनवज्ञा पितुर्युक्ता धारणं मातृरक्षणम् । युक्तक्षमावुभावेतौ नातिवर्तेत मां कथम्
anavajñā pitur yuktā dhāraṇaṃ mātṛrakṣaṇam | yuktakṣamāv ubhāv etau nātivarteta māṃ katham
Bhīṣma dit : «Il convient de ne pas mépriser son père, et il convient de soutenir et de protéger sa mère. Puisque ces deux devoirs sont légitimes, comment aurais-je pu transgresser l’ordre de ma mère ?»
भीष्म उवाच
One should neither disrespect the father nor neglect the protection and support of the mother; when duties to parents are righteous, one should not transgress them, even under pressure.
In Shanti Parva’s instruction, Bhishma explains his ethical reasoning: he frames obedience to a mother’s directive as consistent with dharma, alongside the duty of honoring the father.
