Discrimination of Elements, Senses, Mind, Intellect, and Inner Self

Educational Q&A

The verse defines vānaprastha-dharma as disciplined living: regulated food taken once daily at the prescribed time, constant vigilance against negligence, and continuation of key Vedic duties—agnihotra, care of cows, and full performance of sacrificial components—much as in the gṛhastha (householder) stage.

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma, Vyāsa lays down practical observances for the forest-dweller stage of life, emphasizing restraint, attentiveness, and the maintenance of sacred and social responsibilities even after withdrawing from household life.
