Āśrama-dharma and Brahmacarya: Śuka’s Inquiry on Karma and Tyāga (शुक-प्रश्नः कर्मत्यागविवेकश्च)
ब्रह्मदत्तश्न॒ पाज्चाल्यो राजा बुद्धिमतां वर: | निधि शड्खं द्विजाग्रेभ्यो दत्त्वा लोकानवाप्तवान्
vyāsa uvāca | brahmadattaś ca pāñcālyo rājā buddhimatāṃ varaḥ | nidhiṃ śaṅkhaṃ dvijāgrebhyo dattvā lokān avāptavān |
Vyāsa dit : Brahmadatta, roi du Pāñcāla—le premier parmi les sages—obtint des mondes bienheureux en offrant le trésor nommé Śaṅkha aux meilleurs des « deux-fois-nés » (éminents brāhmaṇas).
व्यास उवाच
That dāna (generous giving), especially to worthy and learned Brāhmaṇas, is a central dharmic act that produces puṇya and leads to higher spiritual attainments (lokas).
Vyāsa cites the example of King Brahmadatta of Pāñcāla, who is praised as exceptionally wise and is said to have attained meritorious worlds by donating the Śaṅkha treasure to eminent Brāhmaṇas.
