युधिष्ठिरने पूछा--पितामह! व्रतयुक्त द्विजगण वेदोक्त सकामकर्मोंके फलकी इच्छासे हविष्यान्नका भोजन करते हैं, उनका यह काय उचित है या नहीं? ।।
bhīṣma uvāca | avedoktavratopetā bhuñjānāḥ kāryakāriṇaḥ | vedokteṣu ca bhuñjānā vratlubdhā yudhiṣṭhira ||
Bhīṣma dit : «Yudhiṣṭhira, ceux qui, s’appuyant sur des vœux non autorisés par le Veda, mangent la nourriture rituelle (haviṣya) n’agissent que selon leur bon plaisir. Et même ceux qui mangent dans des observances approuvées par le Veda—accomplissant des rites avec désir de récompense—doivent être tenus pour “avides des fruits des vœux” ; liés à cette convoitise, ils demeurent enchaînés au retour répété dans le monde.»
