अध्याय २०८ — इन्द्रियनिग्रहः, सत्याहिंसात्मकवाक्, कर्मफलविवेकः
Restraint of the Senses, Non-harming Truthful Speech, and Discernment of Karmic Consequence
ये तथा पूर्वोक्त देवता-दो प्रकारके पितर माने गये हैं। त्वष्टाके पुत्र महायशस्वी श्रीमान् विश्वरूप हुए ।।
bhīṣma uvāca | ye tathā pūrvokta-devatā-dvau-prakārakau pitarau mānītau | tvaṣṭāyāḥ putro mahāyaśasvī śrīmān viśvarūpo 'bhavat || ajāikapād ahirbudhnyo virūpākṣo 'tha raivataḥ | haraś ca bahurūpaś ca tryambakaś ca sureśvaraḥ | sāvitraḥ jayantaḥ pinākī cāparājitaḥ—ete ekādaśa rudrāḥ | mahābhāga aṣṭa vasūnāṃ nāmāni pūrvam eva proktāni ||
Bhīṣma dit : «Comme il a été dit plus haut, les divinités et les Pitṛs sont compris comme étant de deux sortes. De Tvaṣṭṛ naquit Viśvarūpa, illustre et glorieux. Ajāikapād, Ahirbudhnya, Virūpākṣa, Raivata, Hara, Bahurūpa, Tryambaka, Sureśvara, Sāvitra, Jayanta, Pinākī et Aparājita — tels sont les onze Rudra. Ô noble, les noms des huit Vasu ont déjà été proclamés auparavant.»
भीष्म उवाच
The passage reinforces a traditional classification of divine and ancestral orders: it enumerates the Rudras by name and situates them within a broader cosmological genealogy, emphasizing fidelity to earlier authoritative enumeration (“as stated before”).
Bhishma continues his didactic discourse in the Śānti Parva, listing sacred lineages and groups of deities: he mentions Viśvarūpa as Tvaṣṭṛ’s son, then names the Rudras, and notes that the Vasus were already listed earlier.
