Bhṛgu–Bharadvāja-saṃvāda: Vānaprastha-parivrājaka-ācāra, Abhaya-dharma, and Lokānāṃ Vibhāga (Śānti-parva 185)
षड्ज ऋषभगान्धारौ मध्यमो धैवतस्तथा । पज्चमश्नापि विज्ञेयस्तथा चापि निषादवान्
ṣaḍja ṛṣabha-gāndhārau madhyamo dhaivatas tathā | pañcamaś cāpi vijñeyas tathā cāpi niṣādavān ||
Bharadvāja dit : «Sachez les notes musicales ainsi : Ṣaḍja, Ṛṣabha et Gāndhāra ; puis Madhyama et Dhaivata ; et aussi Pañcama, avec Niṣāda.» Par cet enseignement, le sage expose l’ordre du son, suggérant que la connaissance disciplinée et le juste agencement (krama) sont nécessaires à tout art raffiné et, par extension, à une vie bien gouvernée.
भरद्वाज उवाच
The verse teaches the ordered recognition of the musical notes (svaras). By emphasizing correct identification and sequence, it implicitly upholds the broader ethical idea that knowledge, practice, and harmony arise from disciplined structure.
