Greed corrupts discernment and gives rise to a predictable cluster of inner vices—arrogance, anger, pride-intoxication, delusive imagining, emotional highs and lows, and excessive self-conceit—thereby undermining dharma and sound judgment.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction to Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīṣma continues his ethical counsel, diagnosing the psychological and moral symptoms that appear in people whose minds are dominated by greed.
