Dama-pradhāna-dharma (Self-restraint as the Root of Dharma) — Śānti-parva 154

तेषां रुदितशब्देन गृश्रो5भ्येत्य वचो<ब्रवीत्‌ । एकात्मजमिमं लोके त्यक्त्वा गच्छत मा चिरम्‌,उनके रोनेके शब्दसे आकृष्ट होकर एक गीध वहाँ आया और इस प्रकार कहने लगा --'मनुष्यो! इस जगत्‌में अपने इस इकलौते पुत्रको यहाँ छोड़कर लौट जाओ, देर मत करो। यहाँ हजारों स्त्री-पुरुष कालके द्वारा लाये जा चुके हैं और उन सबको उनके भाई- बन्धु छोड़कर चले जाते हैं

teṣāṁ ruditāśabdena gṛdhro ’bhyetya vaco ’bravīt | ekātmajam imaṁ loke tyaktvā gacchata mā ciram ||

Bhishma dit : Attiré par le bruit de leurs sanglots, un vautour vint en ce lieu et parla ainsi : «Ô gens, laissez ici, dans ce monde, ce fils unique et retournez—ne tardez pas. Ici, des milliers de femmes et d’hommes ont déjà été amenés par le Temps (la Mort), et leurs frères et leurs proches s’en vont en les laissant derrière eux.»
