तं ददौ सूर्यपुत्रस्तु मनुर्वे रक्षणार्थकम् । आनुपूर्व्याच्च दण्डो<यं प्रजा जागर्ति पालयन्
Translation
Manu, fils du Soleil, remit ce daṇḍa à ses fils pour la protection du peuple. Et ce pouvoir de châtier, selon une succession ordonnée, passa ensuite entre les mains d’autorités toujours plus élevées, demeurant sans cesse en éveil tout en veillant sur les sujets.
