भारत! उसके मनमें निरन्तर इसी बातका चिन्तन होता रहता था कि “इन बेरके फलोंको हर तरहसे पकाना है! ।। सा तन्मनसि कृत्वैव महर्षेरवचनं शुभा । अपचद्‌ बदराण्येव न चापच्यन्त भारत,भरतनन्दन! महर्षिके वचनको मनमें रखकर वह शुभलक्षणा कन्या उन बेरोंको पकाती ही रही, परंतु वे पक न सके

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

bhārata! tasya manasi nirantaraṃ tad eva cintanaṃ bhavati sma—“imāni badaraphalāni sarvathā pācayitavyāni” iti ||

sā tanmanasi kṛtvaiva maharṣer vacanaṃ śubhā |

apacad badarāṇy eva na cāpacyanta bhārata ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana dit : Ô Bhārata, son esprit demeurait sans cesse fixé sur une seule pensée : «Il faut faire mûrir ces jujubes par tous les moyens !» Tenant fermement dans son cœur la parole du grand ṛṣi, cette jeune fille aux signes heureux ne cessa de cuire ces fruits encore et encore—mais, ô Bhārata, ils ne mûrissaient pas.
