Unrestrained Battle Description and Śakuni’s Rear Assault

Educational Q&A

The verse juxtaposes splendor and horror: martial prowess can appear magnificent, yet the same battlefield is ghora—terrifying—hinting at the ethical tension between heroic display and the suffering inherent in war.

Sañjaya reports that the foremost archer roars loudly, and this signals an escalation: the combat turns into a vivid, dramatic spectacle, simultaneously impressive (citra) and fearsome (ghora-rūpa).
