Duryodhana’s Final Condition, Lamentation, and the Night’s Report

The verse contrasts a righteous, elevated inner disposition with the self-awareness of moral failure: those burdened by wrongdoing feel unfit to claim the same noble resolve or spiritual confidence as one who departs with honor and dharmic composure.
Sañjaya addresses the king, reflecting on the king’s imagined or described departure toward heaven with a dignified attitude that ‘puts the kings in front’—suggesting honor, precedence, or leadership—while Sañjaya (speaking for ‘we’) confesses their own sense of sin and inability to rise to that same state of mind.
