Nārada’s Examination of Royal Ethics
वैशम्पायन उवाच एतदाख्याय स मुनिर्नारदो वै महातपा: । पप्रच्छानन्तरमिदं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम्,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--राजन्! यह कहकर महातपस्वी नारद मुनिने धर्मात्मा युधिष्ठिरसे पुनः इस प्रकार प्रश्न किया
vaiśampāyana uvāca | etad ākhyāya sa munir nārado vai mahātapāḥ | papracchānantaram idaṃ dharmātmānaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram |
Vaiśampāyana dit : Après avoir ainsi raconté, le grand ascète, le sage Nārada, poursuivit en interrogeant encore Yudhiṣṭhira, dont l’âme était vouée au dharma.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights a dharmic method of learning: narration is followed by questioning. Ethical understanding is not passive; it is tested through inquiry directed at a ruler known for righteousness, emphasizing reflective judgment in matters of dharma.
Vaiśampāyana reports that after finishing a prior account, the ascetic sage Nārada turns to Yudhiṣṭhira and asks him a further question, setting up the next segment of dialogue and instruction.
