Adhyāya 31: Rājasūya-samāgama — The Gathering of Kings and the Ordering of Hospitality
ये च कालमुखा नाम नरराक्षसयोनय:,कालमुख नामसे प्रसिद्ध जो मनुष्य और राक्षस दोनोंके संयोगसे उत्पन्न हुए योद्धा थे, उनपर भी विजय प्राप्त की
ye ca kālamukhā nāma nara-rākṣasa-yonayaḥ
Sahadeva dit : «Il triompha aussi des guerriers appelés Kālamukhas, combattants nés d’un sang mêlé d’hommes et de Rākṣasas ; ainsi étendit-il sa conquête jusque sur des adversaires redoutables.»
सहदेव उवाच
The verse underscores the breadth of royal conquest and the testing of strength against even fearsome, socially liminal opponents; it also reflects how epic narrative classifies peoples by lineage to heighten the sense of challenge and achievement.
In Sahadeva’s report of campaigns and victories connected with the wider political consolidation around the Pāṇḍavas, he notes that the conqueror also defeated the group called the Kālamukhas, described as warriors of mixed human–Rākṣasa origin.
