Bhīmasena’s Digvijaya and Tribute Return

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds kṣatriya-ethos: when challenged, a ruler/warrior responds decisively with organized force. Ethically, it highlights resolve and readiness to meet conflict as part of one’s role, while the broader narrative frames such combat as a test of identity, capability, and adherence to duty under pressure.

Bṛhanta quickly comes out of the city with a full fourfold army and begins fighting Phālguna (Arjuna). The scene marks an escalation from mere confrontation to active battle, setting Arjuna against an organized royal force outside the city.
