कर्णेन युधिष्ठिरानीकविदारणम् / Karṇa’s Breach of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Battle-Line
स तीव्रं तप आस्थाय प्रसादयितवान् भवम् । अस्त्रहेतो: प्रसन्नात्मा नियत: संयतेन्द्रिय:,उन्होंने अस्त्र-प्राप्तिके लिये मन और इन्द्रियोंको संयममें रखते हुए प्रसन्न हृदयसे भारी तपस्या करके भगवान् शंकरको प्रसन्न किया
sa tīvraṃ tapa āsthāya prasādayitavān bhavam | astr-hetoḥ prasannātmā niyataḥ saṃyatendriyaḥ ||
Il entreprit de rudes austérités et, ce faisant, plut à Bhava (Śiva). Désireux d’obtenir les armes divines, il demeura dans la discipline—les sens maîtrisés, l’esprit serein—et, le cœur joyeux, gagna la faveur du Seigneur par une pénitence ardente.
पितामह उवाच
Power and success—especially in matters as grave as warfare—are portrayed as requiring inner discipline: restraint of the senses, regulated conduct, and focused austerity. Divine favor is not won by force but by self-mastery and sincere effort.
Pitāmaha (Bhīṣma) describes how the person in question undertook intense penance to propitiate Śiva (Bhava), specifically to obtain powerful weapons; he remained controlled and serene while performing the austerities.
