The verse highlights the disciplined, rule-bound artistry of single combat—where courage is joined with strategy and control. Even amid violence, the warriors’ measured circling and tactical approaches reflect the kṣatriya ideal of skill, steadiness, and testing an equal opponent rather than striking blindly.
Sañjaya describes a one-on-one clash between two great warriors. They circle in a ring (maṇḍala), shift positions, and try different approaches and feints, escalating into a fierce, noisy battle.
