धृतराष्ट्रने पूछा--संजय! अपने पिताके वधको सहन न कर सकनेवाला अत्यन्त शोकसंतप्त द्रोणपुत्र अश्वत्थामाके साथ जब सारी सेनाएँ युद्धसस््थलमें लौट आयीं, तब कौरवोंको आते देख पाण्डवदलमें धृष्टद्युम्नकी रक्षाके लिये क्या विचार हुआ, वह मुझे बताओ ।। संजय उवाच प्रागेव विद्रुतान् दृष्टवा धार्तराष्ट्रान युधिष्ठिर: । पुनश्च तुमुलं शब्दं श्रुत्वार्जुनमथाब्रवीत्,संजयने कहा--राजन्! राजा युधिष्ठिरने पहले तो आपके सैनिकोंको भागते देखा था। फिर उन्होंने वह भयंकर शब्द सुनकर अर्जुनसे कहा

prāg eva vidrutān dṛṣṭvā dhārtarāṣṭrān yudhiṣṭhiraḥ |
punaś ca tumulaṃ śabdaṃ śrutvā arjunam athābravīt ||
Sañjaya dit : Ô roi, Yudhiṣṭhira avait déjà vu les troupes de tes fils en déroute. Puis, entendant de nouveau ce fracas terrible et tumultueux venu du champ de bataille, il se tourna vers Arjuna et lui parla—cherchant la clarté et la juste conduite au milieu du tumulte de la guerre.
