अमानुषेण रूपेण चरन्तं पितरं तव । उस समय रणक्षेत्रमें अद्भुत कर्म करते हुए आपके ताऊ भीष्म अमानुषरूपसे विचरते तथा पाण्डव-सेनाका संहार करते थे। वहाँ अनेक प्रकारके मनुष्य उनके सम्बन्धमें नाना प्रकारकी बातें कर रहे थे
amānuṣeṇa rūpeṇa carantaṃ pitaraṃ tava |
Sañjaya dit : « Ton vénérable aîné—Bhīṣma—se mouvait sur le champ de bataille sous une apparence qui semblait dépasser la mesure humaine, accomplissant des exploits prodigieux en abattant les troupes des Pāṇḍava. À cette vue, bien des hommes, là, parlaient de lui de mille façons, chacun avançant ses propres remarques et interprétations. »
