कालदण्डोपमां घोरां मृत्योर्जिद्वामिव श्वसन् । अब्रवीच्च तदा श्वेतो भीष्मं शान्तनवं रणे,अत्यन्त उग्र, महाभयंकर, कालदण्डके समान घोर और मृत्युकी जिह्वा-सी प्रतीत होनेवाली उस शक्तिको श्वेतने हाथमें उठाया और लंबी साँस लेते हुए रणक्षेत्रमें शान्तनुपुत्र भीष्मसे इस प्रकार कहा--
kāladaṇḍopamāṃ ghorāṃ mṛtyor jidvām iva śvasan | abravīc ca tadā śveto bhīṣmaṃ śāntanavaṃ raṇe ||
Sañjaya dit : Alors Śveta, haletant, leva cette arme effroyable—terrible comme le bâton de châtiment de Yama et pareille à la langue même de la Mort—et, sur le champ de bataille, s’adressa à Bhīṣma, fils de Śāntanu.
