Garuḍa Array and the Ardhacandra Counter-Formation
तत्राद्भुतं महच्चक्रे शरैरार्च्छद् रथोत्तमान् । समावृणोच्छरैरर्कमर्कतुल्यप्रतापवान्,जिघांसन्तं युधां श्रेष्ठ तदा55सीत् तुमुलं महत् । संजय कहते हैं--राजन्! पाण्डवपक्षके लाखों क्षत्रियशिरोमणि महारथी विराट सेनापति शूरवीर श्वेतको आगे करके आपके पुत्र दुर्योधनको अपना बल दिखाते हुए शिखण्डीको सामने रखकर भीष्मके सुवर्णभूषित रथपर चढ़ आये। भारत! वे महारथी श्लेतकी रक्षा करना चाहते थे। इसलिये उसे मारनेकी इच्छावाले योद्धाओंमें श्रेष्ठ भीष्मपर उन्होंने धावा किया। उस समय बड़ा भयंकर युद्ध छिड़ गया उस युद्धमें शान्तनुनन्दन भीष्मने बहुत-से रथोंकी बैठकोंको रथियोंसे शून्य कर दिया। वहाँ उन्होंने अत्यन्त अद्भुत कार्य किया। अपने बाणोंद्वारा बहुत-से श्रेष्ठ रथियोंको बहुत पीड़ा दी। वे सूर्यके समान तेजस्वी थे। उन्होंने अपने सायकोंद्वारा सूर्यदेवको भी आच्छादित कर दिया
tatrādbhutaṁ mahācakre śarair ārcchad rathottamān | samāvṛṇoc charair arkam arkatulya-pratāpavān, jighāṁsantaṁ yudhāṁ śreṣṭha tadā ’sīt tumulaṁ mahat ||
Sañjaya dit : «Là, Bhīṣma accomplit un prodige immense. De ses flèches il inonda et submergea les meilleurs chars, et—rayonnant d’un éclat pareil au soleil—il alla jusqu’à voiler le soleil lui-même sous ses traits. Lorsqu’il s’élança, résolu à abattre les plus grands guerriers, le choc enfla, vaste et tumultueux.»
