Sainyavinyāsa–Lakṣaṇa (Disposition of Armies and Battlefield Omens) | सैन्यविन्यास–लक्षणम्

पाण्डवसेनाके पीछेकी ओरसे हवा चल रही थी और आपके पुत्रोंकी ओर देखकर हिंसक जन्तु बोल रहे थे। आपके पुत्रकी सेनामें जो हाथी थे, वे पाण्डवपक्षके गजराजोंके मदोंकी तीव्र गन्ध नहीं सहन कर पाते थे ।।

sañjaya uvāca | pāṇḍavasenāke pīchekī orase havā cala rahī thī aura āpake putroṅkī ora dekhakara hiṃsaka jantu bola rahe the | āpake putrakī senāmeṃ jo hāthī the, ve pāṇḍavapakṣake gajarājoṅke madoṅkī tīvra gandha nahīṃ saha pāte the || duryodhano hastinaṃ padmavarṇaṃ suvarṇakakṣaṃ jālavantaṃ prabhinnam | samāsthito madhyagataḥ kurūṇāṃ saṃstūyamāno vandibhir māgadhaiś ca ||

Sañjaya dit : Un vent favorable soufflait par-derrière l’armée des Pāṇḍava, tandis que des cris de mauvais augure, poussés par des bêtes féroces, retentissaient en se tournant vers les fils de ta lignée. Les éléphants de l’armée de ton fils ne pouvaient supporter l’odeur âcre et enivrante du rut des grands éléphants du camp pāṇḍava. Cependant Duryodhana, assis sur un éléphant en rut, éclatant comme un lotus, muni d’un howdah d’or et d’un treillis d’or sur le dos, se tenait au milieu des forces kuru, tandis que des bardes et des panégyristes de Magadha chantaient ses louanges—image d’orgueil royal, cernée de présages qui laissaient deviner le déséquilibre moral et stratégique de la bataille à venir.
