vaiśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ pūrvāpare sainye samīkṣya bhagavān ṛṣiḥ |
sarvavedavidāṃ śreṣṭho vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ ||
वैशग्पायन उवाच
The verse foregrounds the moral weight of impending war by placing a Veda-grounded seer (Vyāsa) as witness: true authority is linked to clear-sighted discernment (samīkṣā) and responsibility in moments when collective violence is about to unfold.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Vyāsa, after carefully observing the two armies positioned opposite each other (east and west), enters the scene as a decisive spiritual authority—setting up the subsequent episode in which he intervenes in response to the looming battle.
