अयं ब्रद्मविदां श्रेष्ठो हायं ब्रह्मविदां वर: | इत्यभाषन्त भूतानि शयानं पुरुषर्षभम्
ayaṁ brahmavidāṁ śreṣṭho hy ayaṁ brahmavidāṁ varaḥ | ity abhāṣanta bhūtāni śayānaṁ puruṣarṣabham ||
Sañjaya dit : Voyant Bhīṣma — taureau parmi les hommes — étendu sur sa couche, certains êtres célestes s’exclamèrent : « Celui-ci est le premier parmi les connaisseurs de Brahman ; oui, il est le meilleur de ceux qui possèdent la science de Brahma. » La scène ne peint pas la chute de Bhīṣma comme une simple défaite guerrière, mais comme l’hommage rendu à une vie de vœux austères, de vérité et de dharma inébranlable, reconnue même par les êtres d’en haut.
