sañjaya uvāca | kurubhiḥ sahitaḥ bhīṣmaḥ yudhyamānaṃ parantapa | arjunaṃ ca sapāñcālyaṃ saṃśayo vijaye 'bhavat ||
Sañjaya dit : Ô fléau des ennemis, lorsque Bhīṣma, soutenu par les Kurus, combattait d’un côté, et qu’Arjuna, avec les héros de Pāñcāla, lui faisait face de l’autre, un doute s’éleva dans tous les esprits quant au camp qui obtiendrait la victoire.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the moral and strategic uncertainty inherent in war: even with renowned champions and large armies, outcomes remain doubtful, reminding readers that victory is not guaranteed by might alone and that human effort operates amid larger forces (dharma, destiny, and circumstance).
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Bhīṣma, backed by the Kuru host, is fighting on one side while Arjuna, supported by the Pāñcāla warriors, confronts him on the other; seeing these opposing strengths, observers become unsure which side will win.
