Arjuna and Bhima’s pressure; escalation toward Bhishma
dṛṣṭam etat purā devair gamiṣyati yamakṣayam | yad dṛṣṭaṃ hi purā pārtha tat tathā na tad anyathā ||
Vāyu said: “This has long ago been foreseen by the gods: Bhīṣma will depart to the imperishable realm of Yama. O Pārtha, what the gods have already seen will come to pass exactly so—never otherwise. No one can alter it.”
The verse emphasizes the inevitability of what is divinely foreseen: events aligned with cosmic order (daiva/niyati) unfold as destined, reminding the listener to accept outcomes with steadiness while continuing to act according to dharma.
Vāyu addresses Arjuna (Pārtha), stating that the gods have already foreseen Bhīṣma’s departure to Yama’s imperishable realm; therefore, Bhīṣma’s impending death and posthumous destination are presented as fixed and unalterable.
