Marutta’s Sacrifice: Indra’s Threat, Saṃvarta’s Mantric Restraint, and Divine Reconciliation (अध्याय १०)

saṃvarta uvāca | nareśvara! ahaṃ tān adya stambhayāmi; ato tvaṃ indrasya mā bhaiḥ | mayā samagradevatānām astrāṇi śastrāṇi ca kṣīṇīkṛtāni | daśasu dikṣu vajrāṇi patantu, vāyur vā pravātu, indraḥ svayam eva varṣarūpaḥ san sarvavaneṣu nirantaraṃ varṣatu, ākāśe vyartham eva jalaplāvanaṃ bhavatu, vidyut ca sphuratu—tathāpi tvaṃ mā bhaiḥ || vahni-devaḥ trātu vā sarvatas te, kāmān vā sarvān varṣatu vāsavo vā | vajraṃ tathā sthāpayatāṃ vadhāya, mahāghoraṃ plavamānaṃ jalaughaś ca ||

Educational Q&A

The passage teaches steadfast fearlessness grounded in spiritual power and clarity of purpose: even overwhelming displays of divine force—thunderbolt, storm, lightning, flood—should not shake one’s resolve when one is protected by higher insight and disciplined strength.

Saṃvarta addresses a king, promising to immobilize the opposing divine forces and assuring him not to fear Indra. He declares that he has already neutralized the gods’ weapons, and he lists extreme cosmic threats (thunderbolts in all directions, storms, incessant rain, flooding, lightning) to emphasize that none of these should cause fear.
