Āśvamedhika-parva Adhyāya 1 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s Lament by the Gaṅgā and Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Counsel
सम॑ सर्वेषु भूतेषु वर्तमानं नराधिप । अनुजीवन्तु सर्वे त्वां ज्ञातयो भ्रातृभि: सह
Vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca: samaṃ sarveṣu bhūteṣu vartamānaṃ narādhipa | anujīvantu sarve tvāṃ jñātayo bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ||
Vaiśaṃpāyana dit : «Ô roi, conduis-toi avec une égale bienveillance envers tous les êtres. Que tous tes parents, avec leurs frères, vivent en s’appuyant sur toi et subsistent sous ta protection.»
वैशमग्पायन उवाच
The verse teaches rāja-dharma: a king should practice impartiality toward all beings and ensure the welfare and livelihood of those who depend on him—especially his kinsmen—through protection and just support.
In the opening of the Aśvamedhika Parva, Vaiśaṃpāyana addresses the king with counsel on proper conduct after the great war, emphasizing equitable behavior and the responsibility to sustain dependents and relatives under royal protection.
