Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Counsel on Royal Policy to Yudhiṣṭhira
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: prāñjaliḥ pūjayāmāsa taṃ janaṃ bharatarṣabha | tato viveśa bhavanaṃ gāndhāryā sahito nijam || vyuṣṭāyāṃ caiva śarvaryā yaccakāra nibodha tat, bharatamaśreṣṭha! ||
The verse foregrounds dharma through respectful conduct: a ruler (or elder) shows humility and proper hospitality to revered guests (especially Brāhmaṇas/ascetics), then proceeds with disciplined, orderly action as the new day begins—suggesting that ethical life is sustained by reverence, restraint, and right social duties.
After receiving or meeting a group of revered persons, Dhṛtarāṣṭra respectfully honors them with joined hands and appropriate hospitality. He then returns to his residence with Gāndhārī. The narrator signals a transition: when night ends and morning comes, the next actions of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will be described.
