धृतराष्ट्रस्य वनप्रस्थानम् — Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Departure for Forest Life
ये राजकार्येषु पुरा व्यासक्ता नित्यशो5भवन् । ते राजकार्याणि तदा नाकार्षु: सर्वतः पुरे,जो पहले प्रतिदिन राजकीय कार्योंमें निरन्तर आसक्त रहते थे, वे ही उन दिनों नगरमें कहीं कोई राजकाज नहीं करते थे। मानो उनके हृदयमें शोकने घर बना लिया था। वे किसी भी वस्तुको पाकर प्रसन्न नहीं होते थे। किसीके बातचीत करनेपर भी वे उस बातकी ओर न तो ध्यान देते और न उसकी सराहना करते थे

ye rāja-kāryeṣu purā vyāsaktā nityaśo 'bhavan |
te rāja-kāryāṇi tadā nākārṣuḥ sarvataḥ pure ||
Vaiśampāyana dit : «Ceux qui jadis, jour après jour, étaient sans cesse absorbés par les devoirs de la royauté, en ces jours-là n’accomplirent plus aucune affaire royale nulle part dans la cité. Le chagrin, pour ainsi dire, avait élu domicile dans leurs cœurs ; rien de ce qu’ils obtenaient ne leur apportait de joie, et même lorsque d’autres leur parlaient, ils n’écoutaient pas et n’y trouvaient aucun goût.»
