Austerity, regulated fasting, residual-eating, and hospitality
यथोषरे बीजमुप्तं न रोहे- न्न चावप्ता प्राप्तुयाद् बीजभागम् | एवं श्राद्ध भुक्तमनर्हमाणै- न चेह नामुत्र फलं ददाति
yathoṣare bījam uptaṁ na rohe(n) na cāvaptā prāpnuyād bījabhāgam | evaṁ śrāddha-bhuktam anarha-māṇaiḥ na ceha nāmutra phalaṁ dadāti ||
Bhishma dit : De même qu’une graine semée dans une terre stérile et salée ne germe pas et ne rend rien au semeur, de même la nourriture du śrāddha, lorsqu’elle est consommée par des personnes indignes, ne procure aucun bienfait—ni en ce monde ni dans l’autre. Le rite ne porte fruit que lorsqu’il est offert avec discernement à ceux qui sont aptes à le recevoir.
