The Duty to Fulfill Promised Gifts
यां रात्रि जायते जीवो यां रात्रि च विनश्यति । एतस्मिन्नन्तरे यद् यत् सुकृतं तस्य भारत
bhīṣma uvāca |
yāṃ rātri jāyate jīvo yāṃ rātri ca vinaśyati |
etasminn antare yad yat sukṛtaṃ tasya bhārata bharatanandana |
Bhishma dit : «Ô rejeton de Bharata, la nuit où l’être naît et la nuit où il meurt — entre ces deux nuits, tout mérite accompli durant la vie est défait. Tout ce qu’il a obtenu par le sacrifice, la charité et l’austérité est détruit par le péché de rompre un vœu solennel.»
