Śrāddha-Kalpa: Pitṛ-Pūjā and Tithi-Phala (श्राद्धकल्पः पितृपूजा च तिथिफलम्)
पिता मम महातेजा: शान्लनुर्निधनं गतः । तस्य दित्सुरहं श्राद्ध गंगाद्वारमुपागमम्
pitā mama mahātejāḥ śāntanur nidhanaṃ gataḥ | tasya ditsur ahaṃ śrāddhaṃ gaṅgādvāram upāgamam ||
Bhishma dit : «Lorsque mon illustre père, le roi Śāntanu, s’éteignit, je me rendis à Gaṅgādvāra pour accomplir les rites de śrāddha, résolu à offrir aux ancêtres les oblations qui leur étaient dues.»
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights pitṛ-dharma (duty toward one’s father/ancestors): after a parent’s death, performing śrāddha at a sacred tīrtha is presented as a righteous, socially and spiritually sanctioned obligation.
Bhīṣma recounts that after King Śāntanu’s death, he traveled to Gaṅgādvāra (Haridwar) to carry out the śrāddha ceremonies for his father.
