Nṛga-upākhyāna: Brāhmaṇa-sva and the Consequence of Misappropriated Gift-Cattle (कृकलास-रूपे नृगोपाख्यानम्)
उपतिष्ठति कौन्तेय रौप्पकाउ्चन भूषितम् । शकटं दम्यसंयुक्तं दत्त भवति चैव हि,कुन्तीकुमार! जो नये बैलोंसे युक्त शकट दान करता है, उसे चाँदी और सोनेसे जटित रथ प्राप्त होता है
upatiṣṭhati kaunteya raupyakāñcana-bhūṣitam | śakaṭaṁ damya-saṁyuktaṁ dattaṁ bhavati caiva hi ||
Bhīṣma dit : «Ô fils de Kuntī, celui qui fait don d’un chariot attelé de bœufs neufs et bien dressés reçoit en récompense un char de guerre orné d’argent et d’or.»
भीष्म उवाच
That giving a genuinely useful, well-equipped gift (a cart with trained oxen) is dharmic dāna and yields a correspondingly noble reward; the quality and benefit of the gift shape the merit obtained.
Bhīṣma, instructing Kaunteya (Yudhiṣṭhira) in Anuśāsana Parva’s teachings on dharma and charity, cites a specific example of dāna: donating a cart yoked with trained oxen, and states the auspicious फल (result)—a chariot ornamented with silver and gold.
