Gopradāna–Bhūmidāna Guidelines and Recipient Eligibility
निदाघकाले वर्षे वा यश्छत्र॑ सम्प्रयच्छति । नास्य कश्रचिन्मनोदाह: कदाचिदपि जायते । कृच्छात् स विषमाच्चैव क्षिप्रं मोक्षमवाप्तुते
nidāghakāle varṣe vā yaś chatraṃ samprayacchati | nāsya kaścin manodāhaḥ kadācid api jāyate | kṛcchāt sa viṣamāc caiva kṣipraṃ mokṣam avāpnute ||
Bhīṣma dit : Qu’il fasse la saison de la chaleur brûlante ou celle des pluies, celui qui donne un parapluie en aumône ne souffre jamais d’ardeur intérieure ni de tourment de l’esprit. Même des épreuves les plus rudes et des périls les plus âpres, il obtient vite délivrance et sûreté : tel est le fruit de ce don plein d’égards.
भीष्म उवाच
Bhīṣma teaches that practical, timely charity—here, gifting an umbrella during heat or rain—directly alleviates others’ suffering and yields a corresponding inner benefit: freedom from mental torment and swift deliverance from hardships.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on dharma and gifts (dāna), Bhīṣma is advising Yudhiṣṭhira about the fruits of specific charitable acts, highlighting the merit of giving protective items suited to seasonal need.
