स्त्रिय: पुंसां परिददे मनुर्जिगमिषुर्दिवम्‌ । अबला: स्वल्पकौपीना: सुहृद: सत्यजिष्णव:

striyaḥ puṁsāṁ paridadhe manur jigamiṣur divam | abalāḥ svalpakaupīnāḥ suhṛdaḥ satyajiṣṇavaḥ ||

Bhīṣma dit : «Lorsque Manu s’apprêtait à gagner le ciel, il confia les femmes à la garde des hommes. Il déclara que les femmes sont vulnérables de corps, se contentent de peu, sont naturellement bienveillantes et aspirent à conquérir le monde de la vérité (c’est-à-dire qu’elles sont vouées à satya). Aussi sont-elles dignes d’honneur. Les hommes doivent respecter et protéger les femmes, car le bien de la société et l’accomplissement du dharma reposent sur elles.»
