Śiva-stavarāja: Upamanyu’s Preface and Initiation of the Śarva-Nāma Enumeration
Anuśāsana-parva 17

True praise of the Divine should be grounded in humility and divine grace; one should not presume entitlement to extol the Lord without proper sanction, emphasizing reverence, restraint, and dependence on the deity’s favor.
Vāyudeva introduces his intention to narrate Mahādeva’s character and a hymn, stating he will do so only briefly and only by Mahādeva’s grace, while stressing that praising Īśvara is not possible without first receiving the Lord’s permission.
