Adhyāya 152 — Bhīṣma’s Authorization for Yudhiṣṭhira’s Return to the Capital (नगरप्रवेशानुज्ञा)

जो पतिकी देवताके समान सेवा और परिचर्या करती हैं

yā patikī devatā-samāṃ sevāṃ paricaryāṃ ca karoti, patim ṛte ’nyasmin kasmiṃścid hārdikaṃ prema na karoti, kadācit na kupyati, uttama-vrataṃ ca pālayati; yasyā darśanaṃ pataye sukhadaṃ pratibhāti; yā putra-mukha-vat svāmi-mukhaṃ prati sadā niharati; yā sādhvī niyata-āhārā ca sā strī dharma-cāriṇī ucyate. śrutvā dāmpatya-dharmaṃ vai saha-dharma-kṛtaṃ śubham—“pati-patnyau ekatra sthitvā dharmācaraṇaṃ kartavyam” iti—yā bhavet dharma-paramā nārī bharta-sama-vratā sā pativratā.

Maheshvara déclare qu’une femme est dite véritable pratiquante du dharma lorsqu’elle sert et assiste son époux comme on servirait une divinité, ne donne l’amour de son cœur qu’à lui seul, ne tombe pas dans la colère et garde fidèlement de nobles vœux. Sa seule présence réjouit son mari ; elle tourne sans cesse son regard vers le visage de son seigneur comme on regarde le visage d’un enfant avec une affection constante ; elle est chaste et disciplinée, et se nourrit avec mesure. Ayant entendu ce dharma auspicious de la vie conjugale—à savoir que mari et femme doivent vivre ensemble et accomplir la droiture de concert—la femme qui devient vouée au dharma et observe des vœux en harmonie avec son époux est appelée pativratā (celle qui demeure fidèle au vœu de son mari).
