Dāna-Śreṣṭhatā: On the Superiority of Giving
Maitreya–Vyāsa Exemplum
अहमासं मनुष्यो वै शूद्रो बहुधन: प्रभो । अब्रद्याण्यो नृशंसश्न कदर्यो वृद्धिजीवन:
aham āsaṁ manuṣyo vai śūdro bahu-dhanaḥ prabho | abrāhmaṇyo nṛśaṁsaś ca kadaryo vṛddhi-jīvanaḥ prabho ||
L’insecte dit : «Seigneur, dans une existence antérieure j’étais un homme — à vrai dire un Śūdra très riche. Je n’avais aucune révérence pour les Brāhmaṇas ; j’étais dur et sans pitié, avare, et je vivais de l’usure. Par une telle conduite, je suis tombé dans cet état misérable.»
