ययातेर्वानप्रस्थतपःस्वर्गारोहणम् | Yayāti’s Vānaprastha Austerities and Ascent to Heaven
देवयान्युवाच दत्तां वहस्व तन्मा त्वं पित्रा राजन् वृतो मया । अयाचतो भयं नास्ति दत्तां च प्रतिगृह्नतः
devayāny uvāca: dattāṃ vahasva tan mā tvaṃ pitrā rājan vṛto mayā | ayācato bhayaṃ nāsti dattāṃ ca pratigṛhṇataḥ | tiṣṭha rājan muhūrtaṃ tu preṣayiṣyāmy ahaṃ pituḥ |
Devayānī dit : «Ô Roi, ne me reçois que lorsque mon père m’aura donnée selon le rite ; je t’ai choisi, mais que le mariage s’accomplisse par le don solennel de mon père. Puisque tu ne me demandes pas en prétendant et que tu ne me recevras que lorsque je serai donnée, tu n’as pas à craindre son déplaisir. Attends ici un instant, ô Roi ; j’enverrai aussitôt un message à mon père.»
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic propriety in marriage: personal choice is acknowledged, yet the union is to be regularized through the guardian’s formal consent and gifting (dāna), reducing conflict and ensuring social legitimacy.
Devayānī tells the king (Yayāti) that although she has chosen him, he should accept her only when her father formally gives her in marriage; she asks him to wait briefly while she sends a message to her father (Śukra).
