Ādi-parva Adhyāya 33: Vāsuki’s Council on Averting the Sarpa-satra
हरन्तममृतं रोषाद् गरुडं पक्षिणां वरम् | भगवान् विष्णुने गरुडको अपना ध्वज बना लिया--उन्हें ध्वजके ऊपर स्थान दिया और कहा--'इस प्रकार तुम मेरे ऊपर रहोगे।' तदनन्तर उन भगवान् नारायणसे “एवमस्तु' कहकर पक्षी गरुड वहाँसे वेग-पूर्वक चले गये। महान् वेगशाली गरुड उस समय वायुसे होड़ लगाते चल रहे थे। पक्षियोंके सरदार उन खगश्रेष्ठ गरडको अमृतका अपहरण करके लिये जाते देख इन्द्रने रोषमें भरकर उनके ऊपर वज़से आघात किया
harantam amṛtaṃ roṣād garuḍaṃ pakṣiṇāṃ varam | bhagavān viṣṇunā garuḍako 'pana dhvaja banā liyā—unheṃ dhvaja ke ūpar sthāna diyā aura kahā—'is prakāra tuma mere ūpar rahoge' | tad-anantaraṃ un bhagavān nārāyaṇa se 'evam astu' kahakara pakṣī garuḍa vahāṃ se vega-pūrvaka cale gaye | mahān vegaśālī garuḍa us samaya vāyu se hoṛ lagāte cal rahe the | pakṣiyoṃ ke saradār us khagaśreṣṭha garuḍa ko amṛta kā apaharaṇa karke liye jāte dekh indra ne roṣ meṃ bharkar unke ūpar vajra se āghāta kiyā |
Śaunaka dit : Lorsque Garuḍa—le premier des oiseaux—emportait l’amṛta, Indra, enflammé de colère, le frappa de son vajra, la foudre. Auparavant, le Bienheureux Nārāyaṇa (Viṣṇu) avait pris Garuḍa pour son étendard, lui accordant une place au sommet de la hampe et déclarant : « Ainsi demeureras-tu au-dessus de Moi. » Garuḍa acquiesça : « Qu’il en soit ainsi », puis s’élança à une vitesse prodigieuse, comme s’il rivalisait avec le vent. Voyant le meilleur des oiseaux s’enfuir avec l’amṛta, Indra, seigneur des dieux, l’attaqua dans sa fureur.
