Adhyāya 196: Droṇa’s Conciliatory Counsel and Karṇa’s Suspicion of Counsel (मन्त्र-नय-विवादः)
सोमश्च शक्रो वरुण: कुबेर: साध्या रुद्रा वसवो<5थाश्विनौ च । प्रजापतिर्भुवनस्य प्रणेता समाजम्मुस्तत्र देवास्तथान्ये,चन्द्रमा, इन्द्र, वरुण, कुबेर, साध्यगण, रुद्रगण, वसुगण, दोनों अश्विनीकुमार तथा अन्य सब देवता मिलकर जहाँ सृष्टिकर्ता प्रजापति ब्रह्माजी रहते थे, वहाँ गये। वहाँ जाकर वे सब देवता लोकगुरु ब्रह्माजीसे बोले--'भगवन्! मनुष्योंकी संख्या बहुत बढ़ रही है। इससे हमें बड़ा भय लगता है। उस भयसे हम सबलोग व्याकुल हो उठे हैं और सुख पानेकी इच्छासे आपकी शरणमें आये हैं!
somaś ca śakro varuṇaḥ kuberaḥ sādhyā rudrā vasavo 'thāśvinau ca | prajāpatiḥ bhuvanasya praṇetā samājamus tatra devās tathānye ||
Vyāsa dit : Soma (la Lune), Śakra (Indra), Varuṇa, Kubera, les Sādhyas, les Rudras, les Vasus et les deux Aśvins, avec d’autres dieux encore, s’assemblèrent et se rendirent auprès du Créateur Prajāpati, ordonnateur des mondes. S’approchant du Seigneur des êtres, ils exprimèrent leur inquiétude : « Ô Bhagavān ! Le nombre des hommes croît démesurément ; cette croissance nous emplit de crainte. Sous l’effet de cette peur, nous sommes troublés, et, cherchant sûreté et bien-être, nous venons prendre refuge auprès de toi et solliciter ton conseil. »
