Anupāna and the Doṣa-Effects of Foods, Waters, Dairy, Oils, and Preparations
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Dosha: Vata/Pitta/Kapha
Concept: Tridoṣa-śamana as a criterion of superior remedy; reliance on guru-paramparā (sages’ testimony) for validated knowledge.
Vedantic Theme: Śabda-pramāṇa (trusted testimony) complements direct experience in guiding right living.
Application: Employ buttermilk therapeutically for digestive/metabolic disorders (grahaṇī, atīsāra), edema, piles, anemia, and gulma—especially where tridoṣa imbalance is suspected.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.169.42 (mastu srotas-śodhana); Garuda Purana 1.169.45 (ghee as tridoṣa-jit)
This verse praises takra as tridoṣa-śamana and as a traditional remedy for grahaṇī issues, swelling, piles, anemia, diarrhea, and gulma.
It does not address afterlife themes here; the chapter section is medical/dietary, emphasizing bodily balance (doṣa harmony) as part of disciplined living.
Use diet thoughtfully: buttermilk is recommended as balancing and supportive for digestion, aligned with classical doṣa-based dietary reasoning.
