Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Puja-vidhi","secondary_vidya":"Samanya","practical_application":"Use of hierarchically sacred waters for abhiṣeka/śuddhi: tīrtha-water, Gaṅgā-water, sandal-infused water, mythic ‘oceanic’ kumbhas (e.g., kṣīrārṇava), and Śiva-kumbha water for consecration.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"List","entry_title":"Sacred Waters for Abhiṣeka: Tīrtha, Gaṅgā, Candana-vāri, Kṣīrārṇava-kumbha, Śiva-kumbha","lookup_keywords":["tīrthodaka","gaṅgā-jala","candana-vāri","kṣīrārṇava","śiva-kumbha"],"quick_summary":"Abhiṣeka may be performed with waters of increasing sanctity—from local tīrthas and Gaṅgā to sandal-water and ritually imagined oceanic/Śiva-kumbha waters—each reinforcing purity and consecration."}

Concept: Sanctity is portable through properly obtained/ritually established water (tīrtha, Gaṅgā, kumbha), linking household/temple worship to pilgrimage merit.

Application: When direct pilgrimage is impossible, incorporate tīrtha/gaṅgā water (or ritually established kumbha water) into abhiṣeka to connect worship with broader sacred geography.

Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi (Tirtha-snana, Abhisheka & Shuddhi-kriya)

FAQs

It specifies approved consecration/purification media for abhiṣeka—tīrtha-water, Gaṅgā-water, sandal-infused water, and ritually empowered kumbha-waters (including the Śiva-kumbha).

It preserves a practical, itemized ritual protocol (materials and vessel-based sanctified waters), illustrating the text’s manual-like coverage of temple worship and purification procedures alongside its many other disciplines.

Using sanctified waters in abhiṣeka is presented as a means of śuddhi (ritual purification) and devotional consecration, supporting merit (puṇya) and auspiciousness through contact with symbolically and scripturally sacred substances.
